Diamond Shape: Baguette Cut
The Baguette Shape is different to the other shapes in that it is not a stand alone diamond, and would never take center stage in a solitaire ring or pendant. It is a like a loyal servant, standing to the side and quietly providing support, accent and grandeur to the central stone, filling in with its understated sparkle to maintain a diamond look throughout.
The baguette shape typically comes in smaller weights. Due to the nature of it being used as a side stone, it tends to be measured by its dimensional size and not its carat weight. Step cut stones like the baguette, only have approximately 14 facets, fewer than the number of facets used for even an emerald cut. Its shape and cut can reveal more of its flaws and this means that a higher quality is important.
These stones are cheaper than other cuts.
The baguette is usually a product of rough diamonds which due to their shape or quality will not be able to be formed into other, higher quality shapes, but can still be formed into baguettes and crafted into jewelry.
The baguette is a side or accent stone, not a center stone.
Joe Di Maggio, baseball player extraordinaire proposed to Marilyn with platinum and diamond band set with baguette cut diamonds…35 of them!
R&B singer Mary J Blige’s 5 carat round diamond was adorned by a row of baguettes.
Angie Harmon’s beautiful round (remember when Jason Seahorn proposed live on Jay Leno’s “Tonight Show”?) was flanked on either side by a baguette diamond.
Stefano Nicoletti, Mazal Diamond Creative Director, 3rd generation in the business of what he calls – “the physical expression of love”, shares his thoughts.
While the baguette is certainly not a center stone, nor is it a magnificent fiery piece which will capture your heart, it should not be underestimated for its important role in accenting the gems along side it. There are times when any other diamond would draw attention away form the center showpiece, but the baguette is unassuming, yet regal, and will add soft spoken beauty to its surroundings. It can be used in designing any setting.
